Great link to an interesting article on why costs continue to increase at private colleges regardless of the economic climate. President Daniel Weiss of Lafayette College in Easton, PA identifies policies for faculty development such as a mix of research and teaching, and sabbaticals, as costly but justified to enable the school to provide the student with a transformative college experience and a quality education.

This is relevant to distance education when considering that many online courses, even from state universities, are taught by adjuncts. Online students need to be cautious that they aren't just taking the path to least resistance on the road to a bachelor's degree. This is one of the reasons I am so critical of for-profit schools, their faculty are not treated like "college faculty" in the traditional sense of the term. There is no emphasis on faculty development, research or community service. Instead they are easily replaceable employees who are only as good as the amount of classes they taught the previous term.

There is a middle road that can be taken. The network of community colleges and lower cost state commuter schools still provide a quality education without the extras. While many of the frills found at private colleges are nowhere in sight, the most important factor, a quality tenured faculty, teach at a level comparable to the higher cost private schools.
