Coincidently (or not), there was a story in Thursday's San Francisco 'Chronicle' about how Stanford's endowment grew by 22% last year to a whopping $17 billion, tax free. Meanwhile, tuition continues to rise faster than inflation.

That's caused some members of Congress to complain that university tax advantages are granted for their public benefits, not simply to enable universities to become more profitable. Stanford replies that growing their endowment guarantees that the university will be financially stable into the future. The Congressmen want more of the endowment earnings spent so as to slow tuition increases.
