Dr. Bear,

I think you may be referring to a ghost town on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, located on the river of the same name:

Note that the first syllable is pronounced as "Penn".

Hi

If you still have room after those steaks for one more odd place-name...

Here in Canada we have Dildo, Newfoundland. It's for real.

Never been there, so don't know why or how... :)

Now I DO know a bit more about Dildo Newfoundland:

The name is thought to have come from:

(a) A similarly-named place in Portugal or Spain -or
(b) An Algonquin (native) name for a tree -or
(c) The shape of the headland that forms Dildo harbour.

From a Wiki on Dildo, (the place):

"The town's unusual name has brought it a certain amount of notoriety[1] in the same vein as Fucking, Austria, Anus, France, Hell, Michigan, and Hell, Norway..."

From another article: "We celebrate Canada Day and our own Traditional Dildo Days..."

Cheers and giggles.... :)

I don't know if I'll ever visit. Seems to give off a bad vibe....
