Stratford Career Institute: No DETC for them!

Postby johann » Wed Jul 31, 2013 7:29 pm

This was mentioned in another forum and I found the quote on the DETC site:

"Effective July 11, 2013, the DETC Accrediting Commission denied accredited to Stratford Career Institute, Mount Royal, Quebec, Canada, for the following reasons:

The DETC Accrediting Commission concluded that Stratford Career Institute failed to demonstrate its full compliance with specified elements of DETC standards: for demonstrating that educational program objectives are current and relevant and that program objectives are appropriate and attainable via the distance education method; lacked evidence that instructional materials reflect current knowledge for all programs and that all programs are regularly reviewed and revised; failed to demonstrate that its examination procedures effectively measure the student’s ability to master and apply the skills or knowledge stated as outcomes for the program; failed to demonstrate that qualified subject matter experts and/or instructors/faculty are involved in writing and revising instructional materials; failed to document student achievement and lacked a fully developed outcomes assessment plan, and failed to have an acceptable tuition refund policy."

Harsh words - and every one of them deserved. You don't have to actually learn anything to get high marks and a Stratford Diploma. I've mentioned their "if you can read, you'll succeed" methodology in the past. Above all, I decry Stratford 's completely unaccredited "High School Diplomas" which it sells in both Canada and the US. They are worthless. For these alone, I'd like to see the school closed down!

I think Stratford grads (including me) should get T-shirts. "NO CAR, NO JOB, NO SKILLS - BUT I'VE GOT A DIPLOMA!

Hey, half the new law grads in the country could wear THAT tee shirt!

(Well, if you add a line about $150,000 in debt to Sallie Mae.)

Stratford's a little different:

(1) You don't get your diploma while you still owe them money.
(2) Their most expensive courses are about $900 -- some consolation, anyway.

So -you've decided Stratford Career Institute is not for you. Good choice. Now, what can you buy with the $900 you just saved? Umm...

(1) An off-the rack Brooks Brothers suit? Yes - there are some for slightly less (~$700) and some for slightly more (~$995).
(2) An interesting watch? Shop carefully and you could get -oh, perhaps an entry-level Tissot or Frederique Constant. Nice...
(3) A new, U.S.-made Fender Telecaster guitar? You could do that (on sale) and have $100 left over - spend it on a hardshell case!

Or...you pick. :)

Sorry, Alinco, although I'd be fine with one of those little backpack yeasu's!

Good call! My choice:

(1) I'd probably flog $200 or so on a (third) digital camera - just to have one with a 30x zoom, for birds and little critters
(2) A Google Chromebook - they're about $250.
(3) The change? Best USB music-keyboard I could get for the money. :)

Or maybe I'd blow the entire $900 on a Doctorate from the University of Metaphysics - NOT!

Or maybe I could buy a couple of blocks of derelict houses in Detroit...and re-sell them to wealthy Chinese at a profit. I hear some of them are buying --sight unseen!

Not long ago, in a Thread Far Away, you wrote:

I know this is 'way off topic, but - what makes a BLEND worth $300, then? :?: :?:

Absolutely nothing. Not even the custom engraving of the bottle. But it would still be worth more than a degree from Stratford. :!:

Agreed. Around $300 more, I guess. I understand now. Thanks.

Johann

PS. I dunno what these people at Stratford were thinking/smoking when they applied to DETC. Maybe just severely underinformed, with an exalted opinion of their own method - or what passes for a method.

Somehow, somewhere along the line a lot of people decided that DETC accreditation is a cakewalk. Maybe they're just the latest crew to find out firsthand that's not the case.
