NT Greek - Second/Third Year Greek Resources

Postby DrJ » Sun Jun 12, 2011 12:32 am

Well, I've been taking Greek at my alma mater to prep for my upcoming studies. Thus far Greek has been really good. (one week down and five to-3hrs a day 5 days a week). Premature Question: should I even be considering signing up for Greek 3 this fall? It's third year syntax and book study in Philippians. My phd that I'm enrolling in Oct 31st is in Pentecostal theology- dissertation only. I'm writing toward a pentecostal Theol of leadership. Greek 3 and Philippians are not really necessary. (I don't think). My primary focus in my phd will be practical theology, not NT.

Phd doesn't officially start until January. Money isnt an issue. I will simply be auditing or sitting in for free since I don't need it on a transcript.

QUESTION: WHAT ARE THE BEST SEOND-THIRD YEAR GREEK GRAMMARS/LEXICONS/ETC?

I found a second edition lexicon for $20. Is it really worth another 130 for the 3rd Ed?

I really doubt it. In language textbooks, the changes are usually very minor.

I took two years of Greek and that was plenty for me. Even in full-time ministry work I rarely referred to it. It did make it easier to understand the more technical commentaries, but from a practical standpoint, one year probably would have been enough :D

Hi

This may be of limited academic value to you, but it's free and I think it's quite beautiful. Elpenor's Greek NT and English KJV side-by-side.
It's available for viewing and/or download here: http://www.ellopos.net/elpenor/greek-te ... efault.asp

Regards

Ok, I've finished first semester of mounce. I've bought the UBS 4th Ed and a Readers NT Greek. I also picked up the readers lexicon which contains a verse by verse BAGD definition of all the words that occur 50 times or less! No flipping back and forth for rare words! Love it!

Hi again -

This is for NT Greek newbies, really - not second/third year students, but I think it's a great freebie. 45 (or thereabouts) lectures on Koine viewable/downloadable on YouTube, starting at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbAT2UachRs All 45 lectures fit easily on one DVD.

The school itself appears to be unidentified, though the Professor, Jeff A. Jenkins, is named. A little digging and it looks to me like it's the Nashville School of Preaching, which is a part of the Crieve Hall Church of Christ, http://www.crievehall.org

Just bought a flashcard app on my iPad. Like it so far. Keyed to Mounce. 345 cards.

Just finished Greek 2 at my seminary. I've really enjoyed the past seven weeks. Picked up lots of extra resources including a graded reader of philippians. It's wonderful. Looking into Greek 3 in the Fall.
