visual arts phd

Postby numb » Sun May 31, 2009 2:44 pm

hello!
Can anyone suggest me a low residential or online phd degree offering accredited european/UK university in visual arts?
I'm actually looking for a practice/project based program that I can work on new media or hybrid art forms like installation and mainly video. My second choice is museum studies or exhibition design.

Thanks in advance for any help.

While it's not a distance learning degree program per se, the research degree options can essentially be turned into a low residency PhD program. Here's an example from DeMontfort University.

In my experience, PhD programs in the arts are typically offered in art history or something like that. The terminal degree in the practice of art is the MFA.

I'm hesitant to suggest doing an MFA by DL, but in video or computer arts it might just work.

Two schools that come to mind that you might want to look at are the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Goddard College offers a low-residency MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts that might be up your alley. With a tighter focus, Vermont College of Fine Arts offers an MFA in Visual Arts also worth considering.

thank you all. but I really need a PhD degree instead of MFA, I currently became a full time instructor and I'm planning to keep on an academic track.

there are quite a few practise-based phd programs in the uk, australia and new zealand. in the u.s. there are two: rensselaer polytech offers a studio-based phd in electronic arts http://www.arts.rpi.edu/pl/doctor-philosophy-electronic-arts and transart institute a low-residency studio phd in fine art http://www.transart.org/studio-phd/. best of luck!
