Goes now the World Association of Universities and Colleges

Postby John Bear » Fri Aug 02, 2013 3:03 am

I was trying to find them today, and could find no Internet presence, and the phone numbers I have were not in service. Same with American World University, and indeed with the woman behind it all, Maxine Asher herself. Is it possible that they have all sailed over the horizon? What, then, of the 80+ "schools" that claim WAUC accreditation?

She's 83. Let Dr. Grandma have some peace... :)

Yes, Dr. Bear. Dr. Asher is 83 now. In fact, we discussed the demise of WAUC back last year, here:

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=4695&p=67052&hilit=maxine+asher#p67052

Who will take up the challenge? Well, there's BOUA, UCOEA, IDLAA, REDAC etc. all champing at the bit. And wait... is that the thundering hoof of the Beast of Beebe (and now Sarasota) that I hear knocking - ACI? Or maybe WAUC accreditation is eternal -- I don't remember any five-year re-accreditation periods...

So many unaccreds -- so little time! :)

I checked a few at random today -- from this list on WIki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Asso ... d_Colleges Some I checked have since "sailed over the horizon" as you put it, Dr. Bear. The remaining ones seem to be flying other bogus accreditation, as one might expect. A couple post either no accreditation or "membership" in various organizations.

Examples:

Cambridge International University: http://www.ciuedu.us/ Now claims membership in AGAP (American Good academic Practice) and says AGAP is the world's 3rd largest Accrediting Body. I guess size isn't everything, because AGAP - as CIU admits - is not a CHEA or USDoE recognized accreditor.

American University of London: http://www.americanuniversity.eu/ Claims membership in AAHEA. Oh yeah, we got threads on those guys! :)

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5594&hilit=AAHEA

One exception was the European University of Lefke. Not knowing of the school previously, I misspelled it at first as University of Lepke (Buchalter) as in this guy:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Buchalter

It appears the school (Lefke) is not sinister at all. http://www.lefke.edu.tr This formerly WAUC-accredited school, on Cyprus, has concentrated on associations with mainstream Universities. It is now accredited by the Turkish Higher Education Commission (YÖK).

I think bogus schools will get along fine without WAUC. Many other stickers they can buy. -- And sincere schools have more than once outlived the mistake of WAUC accreditation and "gone straight."
