On "binge learning"

Postby mattchand » Mon Mar 18, 2013 10:33 am

In view of the entities referenced, I almost posted this under "unaccredited," but I think the whole concept they're getting at is more broadly interesting. See http://theumlaut.com/2013/03/06/binge-learning-is-online-educations-killer-app/.

Interesting indeed, Matt - especially the connection made with "binge-viewing" of TV shows. I think TV binge-viewing might have come into being as a means of avoiding the slew of commercials that interrupt TV shows. I know my binge-viewing did! :) It's so easy with season-sets on DVD! I think Binge-learning originates differently, but the result is the same. You can learn/watch for as long as your attention or time available dictates. Come to think of it, you can do that with a book -- or a downloaded lecture series, e.g. Open Yale http://oyc.yale.edu/ so -- the message isn't all that new; it can be encapsulated in several media.

Here's the link, in an easier form:

I also went to the "Marginal Revolution University" link, mentioned in the article above. The course list was short, but interesting:

BTW - Marginal Revolution U. at http://mruniversity.com seems to be a work in progress. Only about half the videos for the "American Housing Finance System" course are available at present. There is also a complete list for the "Economy of Mexico" course, but none are yet available.

I think this is going to be a very interesting site to keep watch on.

Thanks for fixing the link, Johann; it was my first attempt at posting from my Android phone, with obviously mixed results. :)
