How to Pick a Credible Online Master’s Degree

Postby Baileedoris » Mon Apr 11, 2016 11:33 am

When it comes to choosing a master’s degree, there is no sure way to decide. It becomes even more challenging in wanting to obtain one from an online school. This is because digital learning is known for having a bad rep. Some believe it is a scam, but there is only some truth to such a claim.

This article is meant to help students opt for a proper master’s degree program and not some kind of scandal. There are possibilities of online schools being a ‘diploma mill’, but the same can be said for a face-to-face school as well. In order to ensure you pick the right one, look for the following.

1. See if credits can be transferred

One of the most important steps to consider before enrolling for the online program is to see whether your credits can be transferred to another school. If not, then that is a no-brainer deal breaker. Another thing that they should be looking up is the curriculum for the program that they want.

2. What are your goals

Usually students who opt to enroll for online classes are those who are facing a number of problems. They cannot deal with the overbearing tuition fees that they get in regular schools. They have limited time due to family or work. Other than that there are other work or family related commitments that fit right in.

3. Check for accreditation

If you want to be sure that the online program is on the up and up, you need to check it for accreditation. It is like a mark of certification that tells you something is legit. It will let you know that the online degree is indeed something that meets academic standards.

It even lets employers know that students of this program are liable for work. Check the program for regional and international accreditation. Some schools may list it on their sites, but you still need to do a little digging around to see if they check out.

4. Search up for scholarships

Tuition and textbook costs will wear you down and there’s no denying that. But you’ll be happy to know that like traditional colleges, online degree programs also provide financial funding. You can contact the online providers directly, or just look up organizations that offer scholarships for these programs.

5. Find out about your tuition

There is no way of knowing how much a school will charge you so the only way to know for sure is to look it up. Find out whether they are charging you by the semester or all at once.

6. Determine your support services

Once you get your online degree, you need to ensure that you are qualified and that you can get into or advance into the career that you have chosen. If you ask the program about what you want for your next job and when, then they can work on helping you out.

7. Test yourself out

You already know how well off you will be when you aim for an online program. But what if we told you that you can excel in your studies a little quicker? There is something known as Prior Learning Assessments in which you can test yourself out in certain courses and earn credits without taking a class.

8. Do some research on your instructors

Now this is where you have to keep on your toes. You may be wanting to save up by applying for these programs, but even a fraction of your money would go to waste if you have unqualified instructors. Every teacher has to be qualified and own a professional profile. If they do not, then there is no need for this program.

Try to look up such professors online and ensure that they are approved.

I'll add

9. Don't cheat. Do all of your work yourself.

Never employ an online cheating service that offers to write your assignments for you.

The reason I wrote that was because the first post originally contained a link to a cheating website that offered to write students' assignments for them, for a fee. I reported it and Gus deleted the link.
